Just Blew In From The Windy City

WindyCity Yey! I just received a postcard from my pal Yoda in Chicago.

Now I don’t know about you, but I had always assumed that Chicago was nicknamed the “windy city” on account of the blustery weather they presumably enjoy there.

Makes sense right?

Well….as it turns out, the nickname has an entirely different providence.

In 1893 Chicago went head to head with New York to compete to host the World Fair.

The long windedness of the Chicago delegation when making their case was apparently so impressive that the city was quickly dubbed the “windy city”.

How about that?

I will admit though that if you mention “windy city” to me then the first thing I think of is the wonderful Doris Day in Calamity Jane gleefully belting out:

“I just blew in from the windy city.
The windy city is mighty pretty
but it ain’t got what we got
No! I’m telling you boys
they got more wind in the windy city
than the whole of Illinois”

Which I guess just goes to prove that you should never rely on musicals when it comes to your education 😉

the windiest corner in Chicago was right next to my school .. Adams and Wabash !! One can’t walk properly when the winds are high .. it becomes difficult even to cross the road.

Hey, so glad to see that the nothing of a postcard made it to this amazing blog 🙂

    Thanks!

BTW, Chicago is in competition to host the 2016(?) Olympics. I hear that it has a great chance. The city no doubt has experience managing big events with comparitive ease.
